“Watching from the outside, it is a nice thing to watch when all the weddings are massive things in Germany but no one really knows what it is like. I am from Germany, we don’t have a king or a queen, I am 55-years-old and I have no experience of that. “Besides that, this is definitely a subject which I cannot really have a proper opinion about. Manager Jurgen Klopp echoed the club’s stance. Liverpool insist they took on board supporters’ views before making the decision and say it is a personal choice how each fan reacts to the anthem being played. Instead they have been faced with a choice between standing accused of disrespecting the monarch by being the only top-flight club not to play it, or being out of touch with their fans by going ahead with the request. If it had been mandatory the decision would have been taken out of their hands. Liverpool feel that they were placed in an impossible position when the Premier League contacted clubs last Friday “strongly suggesting” the anthem was played before this weekend’s games. However, both sets of players and officials will congregate around the centre circle prior to the 5:30pm kick-off on Saturday - which is being televised live on Sky Sports - for ‘God Save The King’ to be played.
